One of the major problems of the reproductive organs
is the impotence or Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Most of
the people suffering from Impotence are under
diagnosed because they are not able to come up to
doctor and discuss their problem. There is a deep
feeling of embarrassment for a patient to be diagnosed
with Impotence.
What is Impotence? Whenever a man is sexually excited,
his penile arteries start relaxing. This makes the
blood flow in to the penis making the penis stiff and
erect. Due to dilatation of the deep vessels, the
superficial veins diameter is narrowed and eventually
blocked. This leads to more increase in size and
length of the penis. Thus with the erect penis a man
is able to have sex, which include the intercourse.
This happens as a normal body process, which occurs in
almost all the men. But in some men, this normal
physiological phenomenon is somewhat absent or
impaired. This leads to non-erection of the penis or
if the erection occurs it may not last for the desired
duration. This impairment is known as Impotence.
Is it severe problem? Well to an extent it is
not a serious condition but if untreated it may lead
to major complication. The patient may get into severe
lack of confidence in sexual life and then leading to
depression. Although a percentage of normal men too
feel that they don’t get enough of erection.
Is Treatment available? Yes, Definitely. Now a days a
drug commonly known as Viagra or the “blue pill” is
considered as blessing for the erectile dysfunction or
Impotence patient. Transurethral therapy (muse). A
small drug is inserted into the urethra (a duct which
runs from bladder to penis and carries the urine
outside), where the penile tissue absorb the drug and
erects in penis in about 10 minutes. Levitra, another
drug like Viagra is used to treat Impotence. But the
ingestion time is lesser than the Viagra. It can be
taken from 10 min to anything about an hour before
having sexual intercourse. Uprima. This magic pill
works in less than 15 minutes. It is kept under the
tongue and is absorbed sub-lingual.
What are the causes? There are several causes which
can relate to Impotence. Of which old age is
commonest. Majority of people who use drugs to treat
impotence are from old age who wants to enhance their
sexual lives. Physical trauma is another cause. A
accident to pelvis, spine , penis, or testicles may
result in Impotence. Medicines which are used for
diabetes, hypertension also causes Impotence to some
extent. Smoking also leads to Impotence. Hormone
insufficiency of testosterone also causes Impotence,
which can be treated easily by hormone therapy.
Excessive alcohol intake is another cause. In normal
men, there may be Impotence to some extent which they
feel that they are not able to hold their erection for
longer duration of time. This may be because of
psychological causes like anxiety or depression.
Excessive concern about the sexual behavior and
performance may lead to performance anxiety, which
affects their sexual live causing Impotence. Similarly
depression and Impotence go hand in hand. Both leads
to aggravating each other.
